Why is it so contentious to say that life is like a work of art? I believe it is because we no longer understand what art is any more than we understand what life is.
On one side of the divide there is attention only to the text; on the other, attention only to the interpretation. Modern and postmodern war for the world, but what contradiction do they pose to one another? It is excess that makes us believe it is all human, or it is all science. The truth is that something is given and something is constructed, and one is no more real than the other.
At least among the philosopher-kings, there can be peace and understanding. It need only be realized.
